cabasse

cabasse

Cabasse. A good-sounding name, but where does it come from? Founded in 1950 by Georges Cabasse, the Cabasse firm inherited not only its creator’s name, but also his genius. Georges Cabasse is from the world of music, and he is gifted with a special talent. He has a unique memory for sounds. Probably a gift from his ancestors, hailing back to a stringed instrument maker who crafted the first violin signed Cabasse in 1740 at Mirecourt in the Vosges Mountains. Five generations of craftsmen followed him, pursuing the tradition and supplying Europe with violins, violas and cellos, most of which are still being played in orchestras today. The fact remains that Georges Cabasse’s obsession is to perfectly reproduce the concerts he loves, without any alteration, coloration or distortion in the sound. This boundless passion has led him to relentlessly innovate, transmit and share his exacting requirements with the rest of the Cabasse team, so that all ears can enjoy the essence and thrill of pure sound.

focal

The Grande Utopias are not only loudspeakers that have had a great impact on their generation. It’s also the most accomplished concept of “The Spirit of Sound”, the ultimate reference. After the W cones and the pure Beryllium tweeter of the previous models that had marked a technological advance, the Grande Utopia EM adopts an Electro-Magnet woofer (EM) with a force that cannot be compared to classical technologies. Superlative performance, unique style: the Grande Utopia EM is not only a technological monument, it’s above all an acoustic sculpture.

final

It is fair to say that electrostatic loudspeakers gained traction in the marketplace during the 1950s. Everyone seems fixated on Peter Walker’s 1957 launch of the QUAD ESL as the art’s commercial inauguration. But in hindsight it was our own Arthur Janszen’s four-element model 1-30 electrostatic tweeter array that introduced music lovers in 1954 to the transient magic of a force-over-area design with vanishing low moving mass. Even in those days Janszen liked to dispute the fashionable assertion that the loudspeaker was the weakest link in the audio chain. He showed that electrostatics were capable of adding less distortion to the signal path than many phono playback systems, tape decks, or some amplifiers. And that in a nutshell has been the ESL’s main attraction, which is no doubt responsible for the loyal following it has enjoyed over the years. ESLs have been in continuous production, in one form or another, for some 60 years. And that speaks volumes for the technology’s performance attributes.
